The drive back was fast, Jack ordering his driver to step on it. He bounced his little baby self on his knee a little, set his cap on the kid’s fat head, rushed into the auditorium the moment the car stopped and hoped he wasn’t too late. He got lucky. A technical difficulty had delayed things just long enough that by the time he was slipping in with his classmates, they were announcing the last of the letter N. There would be one more before him and Jack made a face as he passed his friends. Nudged and dodged his way through the people to the front of the line and had a half second to take a deep breath before his name was called and he stepped out onto the stage.

Jacky in arms.

The crowd erupted in murmurs as he carried the squirming baby (who apparently didn’t like being on stage, and it was probably the lights that were annoying his sensitive little eyes. Jack remembered Charlie had hated bright lights when he was a baby). But he ignored them (had to), strode across the stage with head held high and back straight. He wasn’t doing this by choice but the smiles of those already graduated on the other side of the stage, of parents in the front rows, of his principle leaning down to say hello to the baby, made him think it might just be worth it.

When the time came for the valedictory speech, it was Jack’s good friend Alex who climbed up onto the stage. Her eyes dark with mascara that had run and her smile bright, she gave her speech and at the end, she looked right at Jon and added:

“I think we can all learn something from each other, as much as anyone else. How to be honest, loyal, how to care about each other and maybe even to be responsible.” Eyes darted over the class. “One of our students almost missed today. But he did make it. And we all watched Jack O’Neill walk across this very stage with that baby in his arms. Now, don’t get me wrong. He owes me an explanation. And, I don’t know about you all, but just watching that made me wonder if I would have done the same. I’d like to think I could. I’d like to think we all could.”

Jack could only grin as thunderous applause filled the room, sent Jacky into a wail. Soothed the baby against his shoulder like an old pro (which he was, but no one knew that), let the girl behind him carry his diploma and scholarship certificate as they filed out (didn’t toss his hat, Jacky was gnawing on it). He expected to be mobbed by his friends as soon as they saw him, and he didn’t care. He was just glad to know that, in everything that had happened, everything that was wrong about his whole situation, he had still left something to remember.
