Steve and Skye waited. Until they’d been in Madison for years and had accepted they were probably never leaving. Until they were married and they were convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that it was going to work out for good. Not that they’d ever really had doubts about that, but like any couple they’d had rough spots and it was good to know they were sure. Until Steve was willing to take the leap, which admittedly was pretty quickly, and Skye was sure that, even if something happened to one or both of the, their child would never grow up not knowing who they were.

All their friends had gone ahead, a handful of little kids and babies in their group and things like going out drinking until three in the morning had mostly been replaced by getting up at five because the kids did. For most of the group, anyway. Steve had always had that sort of routine.

When they finally decided it was time, that they could give it a shot and see what happened, actually getting pregnant had been a surprise. It wasn’t like they’d been actively trying or anything like that. It just sort of happened, and when Skye told him all Steve showed was joy while all he felt was fear. It was a weird sort of terror like Steve had never felt before, and he spent the better part of the whole pregnancy quietly worrying about whether or not he was cut out for the whole thing.

He did what he could to be ready, but in the end he got the most profound advice from Fitz, to whom he had confided in. The smaller man cradled his sobbing toddler, who had bumped her head on a table and seemingly thought she was going to die from it, and gave Steve the most even look.

"You're not cut out for it," he said bluntly. "No one is. We didn't even particularly like children so the pair of you have that on your side at least. You learn. And you use all the help at your disposal."

And Steve realized there was a lot of help at their disposal. A whole group of close friends who had done it first and would be there to back them up at every turn. That knowledge was apparently all Steve needed.

Skye cried and punched him when he gave her flowers for no reason that evening.

The months went by faster than either of them ever imagined they would, and when the time came they ended up at the clinic under the watchful eyes of the doctor and their friends. And after an entire day of waiting, of Skye alternating between crying and shouting at him, Steve finally got the chance to hold, to say hello to, his son.

And he really, really wasn't ready for that.
