[Twilight] A Dinner Out
Jan. 21st, 2012 02:35 pmTitle: A Dinner Out
Fandom: Twilight
Pairing: ...Jasper/Alice. WHATEVER THE HELL IS CANON.
Rating: PG
Warnings: Hunting?
Length: 631 words
There was nothing but forest as far as could be seen, nothing but wildlife as far as could be heard. They soared through the trees, not disturbing so much as a leaf, not alerting anything to their presence until it was too late; until there was nowhere to run and no way to escape the hungry mouths.
Alice led the hunt, usually did when she could see where their prey would be. She kept a pace half a step ahead, focused on some destination beyond knowledge and it took the best of Jasper’s concentration not to let himself be distracted by smaller game and the painful burn within that made even them seem appetizing. In his mind, it was no challenge to trust his partner’s instincts as wholly as he trusted his own, but his thirst had other ideas. It was an effort to follow her steady pace, however successful and well rewarded.
They could smell the herd long before it was seen or heard. The sharp sting of wild animal laying heavily over the warm scent of blood. It didn’t small good, but it smelled like food; that was enough to have the burning thirst flaring and both adding speed to their already lightening pace. They heard them next, shuffling and snorting and the slow thud of their heartbeats. Again, the thirst flared, more persistent with the proximity of their meal. They didn’t need to look at one another to understand the next actions. They moved as one, tearing silently through the forest to where the unsuspecting deer waited. They broke through to attack faster than the animals could react to their presence.
Bones broke loudly under the powerful hands that caught them. The pained screams of the animals were cut short as they were quickly killed. Those who were spared from the attack ran, hearts racing, adrenaline and fear leaving a thick trail behind them. The sound of retreat was quickly drowned out by the soft gulping as the pair hunters drank from their kills, hot blood filling their mouths with the dirty, gamey flavour. It wasn’t a pleasant taste; a flavour that, some days, almost made Jasper give up the ‘vegetarian’ lifestyle. Almost was never enough to have to deal with feeling his victim’s fear as they died, though.
Mangled corpses were tossed aside when the last of the blood was drained from them though it wasn’t really enough. It was never enough, but it was enough to get by. Quiet filled the area, even birds and insects startled into silence by the hunt. The rest of the herd still ran in the distance, not out of hearing range yet, but getting near to. The burn of thirst had calmed to bearable, the usual bearable.
Alice floated gracefully to his side, always graceful but somehow seeming more so after a hunt, her eyes bright as she smiled up at him. “Ready to go home?”
He wasn’t, not really. Not back to the lingering smell of wolves and to Renesmee who was beautiful and wrong, but was their family as much as anyone all the same. Not back to Bella who, even so young, had better control than he ever would, who scared him and worried him as he waited every moment for her to express an action like a normal newborn. But he would go, because it was home. He returned Alice’s smile, nodded.
“Yeah. Let’s go.”
Her smile brightened and her arm linked through his, simple comfort and support and she knew it was all he would take for the concerns, even from her. A tiny hand reached up to brush against his face as she clucked her tongue at him.
“Messy,” she accused, showing him the drop of blood on her finger. Jasper couldn’t help laughing.
