If there was one thing Jacob wished he could change, more than anything else, he would wish people could understand just how imprinting worked. Not the mechanics of it or anything like that, but how it was. How he suddenly felt. The overwhelming need to be with Renesmee was nothing like Bella and the others imagined it to be. It wasn't like he was in love with her. He just loved her.

When she was a baby it was no different than how he imagined a parent's love would be. He felt like he had to be with her, to protect her from any harm that might come her way, even if was nothing more than a stubbed toe. It was being what she needed him to be. Not that she needed another parent, but when Renesmee was a baby, her own mother eating her had been a real, serious concern. So someone to protect her was always needed. And there was always just as much need of someone who remembered that she was a living, breathing person. A person who needed to eat.

When she got a little older, a little bigger, Jacob was her playmate. She had no one her age in her life, and even though she often seemed too grown up for her age, or her size, she was still a little girl. She needed to play. While the vampires were out doing whatever vampires did, Jacob and Nessie would colour or play dolls or they would just sit for hours and she would touch his cheek and show him imaginary worlds they would rule together. But no matter what they did they were always under a suspicious eye.

He knew why, obviously. She was impossible and he was a wolf but even more than that, they were concerned. That this relationship was inappropriate, that he was in love with this beautiful little girl, this child. But it wasn't like that at all. She needed a friend and a protector, so that's what he was and that was the way he loved her.

And later when she didn't need to be protected quite the same way, Jacob was just her friend. When she decided she was in love with a boy in town, he laughed and told her to go for it. Then he was a shoulder to cry on when the boy wasn't interested. He hurt for her because he loved her. The only good thing about it all was no one looked at him sideways for being there for her. They'd come to understand that it wasn't like that.

But Jacob knew and feared that soon enough it would be like that.

It wasn't as if he could help it, even if he wanted to. He'd known since the first time he laid eyes on her that he would love her forever, be in love with her someday. And he lived in constant fear of that day when their relationship would have to change. He lived in fear of the always looming possibility that Renesmee wouldn't choose him. She had that choice, wasn't bound by whatever it was that bound him to her and her alone. There was always a chance that she would not love him the way he would love her. He knew he could spend the rest of his life watching her love another, and he would smile through that unbearable torture.

She grew to an age, more quickly than he was prepared for, and like the flipping of a switch Jacob was in love. It was easy, at first, to pretend like things hadn't changed. So easy to go on being her friend and confidant and it was easier to not be in love. But as days passed it became harder to hide and pretend. He got knowing looks and smirks and smiles that reeked of 'Told you so's. Not wanting to ruin the relationship they had, Jacob took to spending more and more time with the pack, even through the agony of being separated from her.

Renesmee came to him one day, to berate him for abandoning her without a word and to inform him that he was coming home. She kissed him soundly on the lips and told her that she chose him, had always chosen him, since she was a little girl and they ruled her imaginary kingdoms together. And she touched his cheek and showed him a new world. One where they lived together with all the same love she saw in her parents, her family, and so much more than that. She showed him a child of their own, who would know all the love and devotion he had shown to her in her life.

She showed him how she imagined their future and even if Jacob had been able to turn her away, he wouldn't have.
