It started with a message.

The conversation at least. Really it had all started with a years’ old joke.

But it was a simple message, one line that said Could you come around? I, no, we. We have something we’d like to ask you. Which had been hard enough in itself to send, because despite having an enormous circle of friends who she knew cared deeply about her and about Fitz, and about their child, it was difficult for Jemma to admit to things like wanting more than she had. She distracted herself from fussing about it by chasing their daughter around the house. Three years old and she exhausted her daily, but in the best ways. And she knew she could have called on anyone to babysit while she had the conversation she was so nervous about having, but she refused to impose.

So she ran and played and coloured while she waited for Johanna. Who showed up that afternoon with new toys and candy that Jemma had to make protests about. Friendly protests, at least, because she knew her friend loved her daughter like she was her own. Which had just made the decision to ask that much easier.

“What’s up?” Johanna asked, dropping onto the couch after they’d sent the child off to play with her new toys in the other room.

Jemma was quiet, uncharacteristically so, not really knowing how to broach the subject. Even though it had been her idea. Even though she'd extolled the scientific merit to Fitz and talked him into agreeing. Even though she wanted to ask. Johanna seemed to see her hesitation.

"You're not sick again are you? Because I definitely cannot handle that a second time. And you'd better not be wanting to ask me to take care of the baby if you are or I'm going to have to smack you around a little. You should know by now that I'd do it even if you don't ask."

Jemma knew she'd do it even if it wasn't needed. Johanna was family and that was just what she did.

"No, nothing so dire," Jemma laughed quietly, folded her hands in her lap in an old nervous habit. "Slightly related though."

"What's going on?"

"Fitz and I have decided we'd like another child."

She would have seen the confusion in Johanna's expression even if they hadn't been friends for so long. They both knew what Jemma was saying was impossible. She'd been infected with some alternate reality's virus not long after giving birth for the first time, and it had reacted poorly with the antibodies already in her from her encounter with the Chitauri virus in her own world. It had been a messy affair that they'd recently learned had left her unable to have children again. In true alien virus fashion, though, meaning she could conceive just fine, it was simply impossible to carry a child and they'd seen three miscarriages before understanding what the virus had done to her.

"So what? You want me to help you find a kid you can adopt or something?"

Jemma fidgeted. "Not exactly." But boy did she ever wish Fitz was there to suffer this conversation too. "We were thinking more along the lines of maybe you could help us in a much more personal way?"

Johanna understood, of course she did, she was a clever woman and that was one of the many and varied reasons why Jemma and Fitz loved her. But she was also playfully mean and pretending like she didn't just to make Jemma say it. She could feel her cheeks turning red, and she'd thought her friends had cured her of that ages ago.

"We were hoping," she said carefully, not because she thought Johanna would ever judge her for the request, but because she truly and deeply wanted her friend to say yes, "that you might be willing to have the baby for us. With us, really, because obviously we would never dream of cutting you out."

Johanna just smiled at her brightly. "Does that mean I finally get to have real sex with Fitz?"

Jemma should have expected that response. She half did expect it. But expecting it and being able to respond to it were two very different things. She sputtered, but laughed, and in an old habit, rambled.

"Well. I suppose he'd probably be amiable to if that's what you want. I mean, we sort of just assumed it would be better to go the route of an alternate form of conception. Something more predictable like zygote intrafallopian transfer, or intracytoplasmic sperm injection. But...yes. I suppose you could… That is one way to go about it. You know I’d hardly mind, we do love you endlessly and if you were to grow another human being for us--”

Johanna’s laughter interrupted, and Jemma just made a face, suddenly realizing that her friend hadn’t been entirely serious. Even after so long she still couldn’t always tell. Every time she thought she had Johanna figured out, she went and did something that just threw Jemma for another loop.

The next moment Johanna sobered, reached out and took Jemma’s hands. “You know I’d do anything for you guys,” she said, and Jemma couldn’t doubt her sincerity for a moment. “Seriously. Whatever you need from me, I’ll do it.” And just like that, she was teasing and playful all over again. “But I definitely wouldn’t turn down getting laid as part of this deal.”

Jemma giggled, a watery, happily tearful sort of giggle, and though she wasn’t the sort to do such a thing very often, she hugged Johanna tightly.

“Thank you.”

“I’m just in it for the baby boobs.”
